Swift & Hale is a brand demo from CHS. Nothing here is for sale. About this demo

Terms

This page has two parts. The first is true and covers your use of this demo. The second is an example of the terms of sale Swift & Hale would publish if it were a real shop.

Using this demo

Swift & Hale plc is a fictional company. This site is a demonstration made by CHS (Clive Holmes Limited, trading as CHS) to show how a retailer's website could look and work. Names, figures, products and people on it are invented.

  • Nothing is for sale. You can fill a basket and go through checkout, but payment is switched off, so no payment is taken, no order is placed and nothing is sent to you.
  • You can create an account to try the site. We delete it, and everything attached to it, 30 days after you sign up, or straight away if you delete it yourself in your account. The privacy page says what we keep, and the cookies page lists the cookies the demo sets.
  • Please don't enter anything sensitive, such as health or payment details or anyone else's information. You can use a made-up name and address.
  • The product photographs were generated for this demo and show products that don't exist. Prices, stock levels, reviews and the order history in your account are examples too.
  • The phone numbers on this site come from ranges Ofcom keeps for use in drama, so they won't connect, and Swift & Hale's addresses are invented.

Example terms of sale

Everything from here to the end of the page is an example, written as Swift & Hale's terms of sale for customers in the UK. Swift & Hale does not exist and sells nothing, so these terms are not a contract with anyone.

About us

You buy from Swift & Hale Retail Limited, part of Swift & Hale plc, registered in England and Wales, with its registered office at Hale House, Fordington Fields, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 9SH. You can reach customer services on 01632 960 123 or by post to Hale House.

These terms cover orders you place on our website, in our app or by phone, and our Club and repair services. Hire has its own terms, which we give you when you book. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights.

Ordering

  1. You add items to your basket and check out.
  2. We email you to confirm we've received your order. This doesn't yet mean we've accepted it.
  3. We accept your order, and the contract between us starts, when we email to say it has been dispatched or is ready to collect.

We may turn down an order if an item is out of stock, if there's a mistake in the price or description, or if we suspect fraud. If we do, we'll tell you and refund anything you've paid.

You must be 18 or over to order from us. Some items, such as knives and multi-tools with locking blades, can only be sold to adults by law, and we check age on delivery or at collection.

Prices and payment

Our prices include VAT. If you're a Club member and signed in, you pay members' prices where they're shown. Delivery charges are shown before you pay, and you can see them on our delivery page.

We take payment when you place your order. If we find a mistake in a price before we dispatch, we'll contact you, and you can go ahead at the correct price or cancel the order for a full refund.

Delivery

We aim to deliver within the times on our delivery page, and always within 30 days of your order unless we agree otherwise. If we can't, you can cancel and we'll refund you in full.

The goods are your responsibility once they're delivered to you, to someone you've asked to accept them, or to a safe place you've chosen. They become yours once we've received payment.

Your right to cancel

The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give you the right to change your mind about an order:

  • You can cancel within 14 days, starting the day after you receive the goods. If your order comes in more than one parcel, the 14 days start the day after the last one arrives.
  • You don't need to give a reason. Call us, write to us or bring the goods into a shop.
  • Send the goods back within 14 days of telling us. Returns by post are free.
  • We refund you within 14 days of receiving the goods back, or of you showing us you've sent them, whichever comes first. The refund includes the delivery charge, up to the cost of our standard delivery.
  • We may reduce the refund if the goods are worth less because you handled them more than you would in a shop.

You can't cancel for food, for sealed goods that can't be returned for health or hygiene reasons once you've opened them, or for items made to your own specification.

For repairs, you can cancel within 14 days of booking. If you ask us to start work within those 14 days, you pay for the work we've done before you cancel, and once the repair is finished you can no longer cancel it.

Our 60-day returns promise

As well as your right to cancel, you can return anything unused within 60 days of receiving it for a full refund, by post or in any of our shops. We usually refund within 5 working days of getting it back. The returns page explains how.

Faulty goods

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If they're not:

  • within 30 days of delivery, you can reject them and get a full refund
  • after 30 days, you can ask us to repair or replace them, and if that doesn't work, you can have a refund or a price reduction
  • after six months, a refund may be reduced to allow for the use you've had
  • you can bring a claim for up to six years after delivery (five years in Scotland)

For the first six months, we assume a fault was there when you got the goods unless we can show it wasn't. Wear and tear from normal use is not a fault.

The Club

  • The Club is free to join for anyone aged 16 or over who lives in the UK or Ireland. You can have one membership.
  • Members' prices apply when you're signed in or show your membership card in a shop.
  • You earn 2% of qualifying spend as repair credit. Qualifying spend doesn't include gift cards or delivery charges. Credit lasts 18 months from the day you earn it, can be spent on repairs, hire and new kit, and has no cash value. If you return an item, the credit you earned on it is taken off your balance.
  • Repairs to Hale waterproofs and packs are free for everyone under our lifetime repair promise. Members also get free repairs on other Hale and Swift kit.
  • Members can book a free place on our led walks. A leader may change the route or cancel a walk because of the weather or conditions, and you must follow the leader's instructions on the day.
  • We send members the printed catalogue twice a year if they ask for it.

We may change Club benefits, and will give members at least 30 days' notice before we do. We may close a membership that is misused, for example to buy at members' prices for resale. You can leave at any time, and any unused repair credit then lapses.

Repairs

  • Book a repair at the till in any of our shops or in the app. If your shop has no repair bench, we send the item to the nearest one.
  • Repairs to Hale waterproofs and packs are free, for as long as you own them. Club members get free repairs on other Hale and Swift kit.
  • For any other repair, we tell you the price before we start and only go ahead when you agree.
  • We give you a ready date when you book. Most repairs take about nine days. Boot resoling goes to a specialist workshop and takes longer.
  • If we can't repair an item, we'll tell you why and give it back to you free of charge.
  • We'll contact you when your repair is ready. If you don't collect it within 90 days of the ready date, after we've reminded you, we may recycle the item.

We take reasonable care of your kit while we have it, and we carry out repairs with reasonable care and skill. If a repair fails because of our workmanship, we'll do it again free.

Our responsibility to you

We're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We're not responsible for loss that wasn't foreseeable when the contract was made.

We sell to customers for their own private use. We're not responsible for business losses, such as lost profit or lost business opportunities.

Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for breaking your legal rights as a consumer.

Read the instructions that come with your kit and use it as they say. Never use a stove or barbecue inside a tent, porch or awning: carbon monoxide builds up quickly and can kill.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring legal proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring them in the courts where you live. If you buy in one of our shops in the Republic of Ireland, Irish consumer law applies to that purchase.

If something has gone wrong, please call or write to customer services first, and we'll do our best to put it right.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The terms that apply to your order are the ones on this page when you place it. This version is dated September 2026.
