Swift & Hale is a brand demo from CHS. Nothing here is for sale. About this demo

Careers

We employ 3,900 people in 128 shops, at our distribution centre in Somerset and at Hale House in Dorchester. Everyone is paid at least the real Living Wage, and many of us joined because we like being outside.

This is a demo. Swift & Hale plc is a fictional company created by CHS for demonstration. The jobs on this page are part of the demo and are not real, so there is nothing to apply for. More about this demo.

Pay and benefits

Every colleague has been paid at least the real Living Wage since April 2023. Shop teams also earn a bonus based on their own shop's sales and service scores. Our median gender pay gap was 3.9% at the April 2025 snapshot.

We pay up to 5% of your salary into a pension, the same rate as our executive directors. UK colleagues can join Sharesave, saving up to £500 a month to buy our shares at a discount, and about a third of those who can have done so. You also get a colleague discount on kit.

Every colleague gets two test days a year to take new products on the hill and tell the product team what they found. Test-day feedback changed the hip belt on the Hale 45-litre pack for Spring Summer 2026.

Training

Shop colleagues can train as boot fitters, and 1,100 of us have. New repair technicians spend six weeks at an established bench before they work on their own. 210 colleagues hold a mountain or lowland leader award, and they lead the walks our shops run for Club members. Last year 36 colleagues took part in our Next Store Manager programme, 20 of them women.

How we listen

The Colleague Voice forum has 14 elected colleagues from shops, Huntworth and Hale House. It meets Ravi Dhanda, the non-executive director who looks after workforce engagement, four times a year, and the full board twice.

Last year the forum asked for fairer Sunday shifts, and they now go on a rota published at least four weeks ahead. It also raised working alone in our 38 smaller shops. We changed rotas at 31 of them so nobody opens or closes alone, and gave colleagues at the other seven personal alarms linked to a monitoring centre. Anyone can raise a concern in confidence through our Speak Up line.

When we open a shop

Each new shop creates jobs, and colleagues in nearby shops get the first chance to apply. We recruit most of each new team locally and train them at a nearby shop before opening day. All 14 colleagues at Oban, which opened in September 2025, were recruited in the town.

This year we are opening six shops, in Settle, Dolgellau, Pitlochry, Kendal, Buxton and Killarney, with about 150 jobs between them.
